Join us for these two free workshops led by veteran journalists and community leaders and increase your knowledge and skills in the coverage of HIV and AIDS. The New Ways Miami workshops are:

  • Latinos at the Crux of the Epidemic (1:45 - 3:00 pm):
    • Miami-Dade County is first in the nation in its rate of new HIV infections, and Broward County, Florida is second – together being home to almost 45,000 residents living with HIV, thousands of them Latino. Expert local panelists will shed light on the epidemic in these areas, what’s working and what’s clearly not, and where the media still isn’t getting the story right. Moderated by Diane Anderson-Minshall, the workshop will feature panelists Stephen J. Fallon, Christopher Bates and Trang Nguyen Wisard.

  • HIV Criminalization and the Epidemic (3:15 - 4:30 pm)
    • From crime reporting to life sentences, people with HIV are often unfairly penalized for being positive under HIV criminal statutes set up at the height of the epidemic in the 1980s. Now the same politicians who set the laws are trying, with urging from activists, to overturn or at least modernize these statutes. Here’s why, and what we — especially trans women, people of color, and gay and bi men— stand to lose if that doesn’t happen. Moderated by Diane Anderson-Minshall, the workshop will feature panelists Kamaria Laffrey, Jacob Anderson-Minshall and Tami Haught.

These interactive panels will give you new ideas for great news stories. The workshops are just a small part of what are on tap at NLGJA's 2016 National Convention and LGBT Media Summit in Miami. You can register online today in order to gain access to the many other sessions and workshops - along with networking receptions and more - that will be offered from September 8-11.
