NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists is proud to continue a partnership with the Facebook Journalism Project. The Facebook Journalism Project is committed to supporting quality journalism that strengthens and connects communities. They have partnered with some of the leading journalism organizations in the country, including NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, to establish The Facebook Journalism Project Scholarship program for students who aspire to pursue a career in journalism and media.

For the 2022-2023 school year, the Facebook Journalism Project Scholarship will be offered to journalism organizations serving underrepresented communities that share Facebook’s commitment: NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Asian American Journalists Association and Native American Journalists Association. NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists is excited to expand our support for the next generation of journalists by participating in the Facebook Journalism Project Scholarship program.

Facebook has provided funding for NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists to award five $10,000 scholarships for five years, beginning in 2018.

Application requirements:

To be eligible to receive the scholarship, applicants must be enrolled juniors, seniors or graduate students at an accredited university in the United States. NLGJA:The Association of LGBTQ Journalists accepts applicants from all disciplines, departments and majors.

The application must show a commitment to storytelling as demonstrated by completed coursework, clips/work samples and a letter of recommendation from a professor or internship supervisor familiar with their work and attesting to career commitment

Application packages should include:

•   Submitted application form

•   One-page résumé

•   Proof of attendance: a letter of acceptance or a letter of enrollment from a U.S. community college or four-year university (contact awards@nlgja.org for exceptions, scans are acceptable)

•   Official transcripts (scans are acceptable)

•   Two letters of recommendation from a professor or internship supervisor familiar with your work and who can attest to your career commitment

•   Personal statement demonstrating your commitment to the association's mission and the field of journalism

•   Three to five work samples

(Any audio or video element should be between 2 and 5 minutes. Photo galleries should have between 10 and 30 photos. Infographics should be limited to two graphics. Text should be no more than 750 words.Stories do not require all elements, but should be designed for online consumption where users expect a rich multimedia presentation.)

Recipients of the scholarship are ineligible to receive additional scholarships from NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists or any of the other participating diversity-focused journalism associations through 2022. Other participating associations include, Asian American Journalists Association, National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists and Native American Journalists Association.

Applicants do not need to be a member of the LGBTQ community to apply.

Restrictions and Terms

The Facebook Journalism Project Scholarship is a one-time award. The scholarship is available only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who plan to attend a full year of school in the U.S. The scholarship may not be used to pay for course work or credits earned abroad. The scholarship award may pay for tuition only. The amount of the scholarship award will not exceed the student’s annual tuition costs.The Facebook Journalism Project Scholarship will work with college or university financial aid offices to determine the best schedule for distributing awards, which will be sent directly to the institution. No payments will be made directly to students. The scholarship must be disseminated within the calendar year it is awarded.
